How to Enjoy US Black Friday Sale From SingaporeReading Time: 3 minutes
What is Black Friday?
First things first – Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the US, and it’s used to unofficially (or officially) mark the start of the holiday shopping season. This year, Black Friday will be on the 24th of November (which starts at 1PM Singapore time).
What should I do? Where do I start?
Since Black Friday has only recently gained popularity in Singapore, not everybody will go crazy slashing prices… So in order to get most as well as the best deals, you’ll probably need to look to where it all started – the US.
Before you head off, we’ve got a couple tips for you!
1. Look for the stores that runs MAJOR discounts during Black Friday
Most electronics, apparels and toys are cheaper in US and especially on Black Friday. These will be places like ASOS, Target, Amazon, American Eagle Outfitters and so on. For a more comprehensive guide, always keep track of sites like https://blackfriday.com/ and https://www.theblackfriday.com/.
We are currently updating the our comprehensive list of Amazon Black Friday Deals so bookmark this post for all the hottest updates.
2. Prepare a WISH list beforehand
It officially starts on the midnight of 24th, which translate to early hours in SG for us. To avoid the mad rush and grogginess, prepare your items in your shopping cart a few days ahead of 24th and check them out officially when the sales start.
FYI, the items go out of stock fast so fastest fingers first!
3. Make sure they do ship to Singapore
I’ve actually wasted time looking at things that don’t even ship here. Don’t waste your time. (You only have 24 hours!)
For Amazon.com, here’s how
i. Select International Shipping first
ii. To find eligible products available for FREE shipping to Singapore
Sign into Amazon.com account, and set location to Singapore.
Next, type into search bar the item you are looking for.
At the left side bar of the page, select “Ship to Singapore” and “Free International Shipping” as illustrated (above). The eligible products will be shown!
4. Learn how to freight forward and use international delivery service providers
Your stuff doesn’t ship here? Just head over to any of the sites (borderlinx, comgateway, hopshopgo, etc) and watch their tutorial. Usually they just give you an address and you ship your orders there.
More tricks on Amazon Shopping here
Are there things I shouldn’t buy on Black Friday?
Christmas Goods – Even though they will be discounted during Black Friday, the best time to buy Christmas goods is actually after Christmas (since they’re off season then!)
Toys – As much as it’s tempting to do some early Christmas shopping, toys are often cheaper closer to the date as stores try to clear their goods with some good ol’ final day or final week price slashing
DSLR Cameras – Reason being that you should always wait for around February when the new camera models are launched and the “old” models start going on discount. Same concept applies for other things like televisions!
Use legit coupon codes to save even more! (the RateX extension has an in-built one!)
We automatically search and apply relevant codes prior to checkout for you, so download and give it a shot on Google Chrome (Desktop)
Use a price comparison website to check for historical prices
For Amazon, there are websites like camelcamelcamel that help you do that, but if all else fails, I’d suggest going on Carousell to see what other people are selling the item for. If you plan to buy from a local site, hit up iPrice. They will give you a clear price comparison of a particular product between different stores.
Take note of time zones (EST/PST difference)
The US Sites will run the discounts based on US time – so don’t get carried away until 12am then realise that the sale is long over. It will be either 1pm or 4pm depending on EST/PST (east coast vs west coast time) – set a clock to check out your cart
